A brief history of St. Paul’s Church and its Rectors.

Known as St. Thomas Chapel (1817-1822)

The Rev. Charles Burroughs was voted rector in 1818, while still retaining the office of Rector of St. John’s, Portsmouth (gave assistance to St. Thomas while living in Portsmouth). Resigned as Rector in 1821.

The Rev. John L. Blake chosen as rector in April 1821 until 1823. He was also Rector of Christ Church (later St. Andrew’s, Hopkinton).

Services according to the Episcopal Church Liturgy continued in Concord at a sporadic pace.  In 1835 a new organization came into existence under the name of Wardens and Vestry of St. Paul’s Church.

The Rev. Moses B. Chase of St. Andrew’s, Hopkinton was chosen as Rector. He remained in Hopkinton but presided over services through 1836.

 In 1836, St. Paul’s was made a missionary station by the domestic committee of the Board of Missions of the Protestant Episcopal Church. The parish was admitted into union with the Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the Diocese of New Hampshire on June 28, 1837. A committee for a church building was established on October 3, 1838. The building was consecrated on January 1, 1840 by Bishop Alexander Griswold, who formally instituted a new Rector on January 2, 1840.

The Rev. Petrus Stuyvesant Ten Broeck. He had been working with the parish for “several years” before this. He served until October of 1844 when he resigned.

The Rev. Darious R. Brewer can in November 1844 and stayed until 1846

The Rev. Thomas Leaver succeeded Rev. Brewer until his death in 1847 at the age of 33.

The Rev. Dr. Newton E. Marble as elected St. Paul’s Rector in February of 1848. His tenure ended on March 29, 1857. The Rev. Dr. Marble was an incorporator and original trustee of St. Paul’s School.

The Rev. Dr. James H. Eames began his duties as Rector on Easter Sunday 1858 and remained until his death in 1877. The present St. Paul’s was contrasted on the west side of the old wooden St. Paul’s. The new St. Paul’s was consecrated on December 13, 1859 by the Rt. Rev. Carlton Chase of New Hampshire.

The Rt. Rev. William Woodruff Niles (Bishop of NH 1870-1914) accepted the rectorship of St. Paul’s in 1878, making St. Paul’s “Pro-Cathedral”. In June of that year, the Rev. Dr. Daniel Crane Roberts became Vice-Rector until 1896 and as Vicar from 1897 until his death on October 31, 1907.

The Rev. W. Stanley Emery was called as Vice-Rector n 1907 and in 1922 was made Rector of St. Paul’s until his death on August 39, 1927.

The Rev. Richard Lyford, curate from 1925-26 kept the church going until the call of a new rector.

The Rev. Arthur O. Phinney was Rector from 1928-1931.

The Rev. Bernard N. Lovgren was Rector from 1931-1945.

The Rev. Charles F. Hall was Rector from 1945-1948 when he was elected as Bishop of NH.

The Rev. Clinton L. Morrill was called as Rector in 1948 until his death in July 1969.

The Rev. David G. Hamilton, who served as the last curate under Rev. Morrill, became Priest in Charge on September 8, 1969 and was called as Rector in 1970, serving until January 1, 1982.

Rev. Allan H. Munroe then served as Interim until the calling of the next Rector.

The Rev. David Glendinning, was called and joined us for Advent 1982, and served through Easter 1989.

The Rev. Edward W. Mills served as Interim Rector from July 1989 until the calling of the next Rector.

The Rev. David P. Jones was called and joined us in the winter of 1991, and served until 2006.

We then were served by Interim Priest, Rev. Bruce Jacobson, and Interim Assistant Priest, Rev. Celeste Hemingson, from November 2006 until the calling of the next Rector.

The Rev. Kate Atkinson was called in the summer of 2009, and retired on March 13, 2023.

The Rev. Denis C. Brunelle served as Interim Rector from October 2022 to the end of 2023.

The Rev. Jean C. Beniste was called as Rector beginning of January 2024.

The great fire of 1984 completely destroyed the interior of the St. Paul’s building and a complete rebuild of the interior took place modifying the internal space to the new liturgical demands of the 1979 BCP.
